You might not know you need a day cream with hyaluronic acid, but you do! Here we find out exactly how a scary sounding acid is the most natural thing in the world to put on your skin.
Firstly, what is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is also known as sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronan or hyaluronate. It is the skin’s own hydrating molecule – and known for being able to absorb up to 1000 times its own weight in water. This molecule is able to keep skin, especially on exposed areas like the face and hands plump, smooth and supple.
As we get older, these supplies in our skin decrease. Which is one of the reasons why our skins dehydrate, sag and form lines.
HA is found in all mammals, and usually located in the joints, nerves and eyes. It is used to hydrate skin and hair. It was discovered way back in 1934 by Karl Meyer. However, the real benefits were discovered by a visit to the Japanese village of Yuzuri, where old men and women were sporting wrinkle-free complexions, luscious hair and flexible joints. It was worked out that this was from oestrogen-like molecules in their diet from soya and tofu, which sent signals to the cells to make more hyaluronic acid. Who knew an acid would be good for the skin?
With lots of research being carried out, scientists have discovered that HA boosts skin hydration, stimulates production of collagen in skin, works as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger, maintains skin elasticity, cushions joints and nerve tissues, has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity and maintains the fluid in the eye tissues, which may help to protect against many possible eye problems.
Half the body’s supply of HA is located in the skin’s collagen and is an excellent moisturiser. It is also has powerful properties in the removal of waster matter from cells – especially those which have little blood circulation.
How handy would it be to have a cream that was high in HA to slather on the skin to keep it looking youthful and radiant. Luckily, there are products on the market like Atlantis Skin Care Glowing Skin Day Cream which are completely natural and kind to the skin – making it the ideal day cream to wear in winter, spring, summer and autumn.
